Some aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State on Monday staged a protest at the State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, rejecting a directive that newly elected council chairmen must seek state government clearance before appointing Secretaries to Local Councils and Supervisory Councillors.
The protesters, drawn from the 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), accused the state party leadership of fostering imposition and demanded the immediate removal of the APC state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi. They also urged President Bola Tinubu to caution party chieftain James Faleke over alleged interference.
According to them, the directive undermines grassroots democracy and could hinder governance at the local level.
In response, the Lagos APC denied any allegations of imposition. In a statement, party spokesperson Mogaji Seye Oladejo clarified that the selection of council cabinet members would adhere to internal party guidelines and consultations at the local level.
Oladejo stressed that the state party only offers advisory input and does not dictate appointments, urging party members to direct grievances through official channels.
The party also reiterated its commitment to resolving internal disputes through dialogue, warning against escalating issues beyond the party structure.
