Presidential aide Abdulaziz Abdulaziz has defended President Bola Tinubu’s recent meeting with former NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, saying there is nothing unusual about political dialogue across party lines.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Abdulaziz said: “Politicians talk; it’s not a sin talking across lines.” He added that Tinubu and Kwankwaso share a relationship that dates back over three decades, noting their time as senators and governors.
He insisted that talks between the two should not be met with suspicion, as political alignments and re-alignments are normal in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Meanwhile, former political adviser to the Vice President, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has raised concerns over the credibility of the 2027 general elections. In a post on X, he warned that failure to ensure transparency could plunge the country into crisis.
“Voices are being raised regarding integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen,” Baba-Ahmed wrote. “Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers. Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises.”
His comments follow a proposal in the House of Representatives for all five tiers of elections — presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship and House of Assembly — to be held on a single day, pending amendments to the Electoral Act.
