Ogun APC Inaugurates Campaign Council as Edo PDP Demands Credible Bye-Elections

Date:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has inaugurated its Campaign Council and Committee ahead of the August 16 by-election for Remo Federal Constituency, even as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparent and credible polls in its upcoming bye-elections.

The Ogun by-election follows the death of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who represented the constituency covering Ikenne, Remo North, and Sagamu local government areas.

During the inauguration ceremony held at the Multipurpose Hall, Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, urged party members to remain united and work collectively to ensure victory for the APC candidate, Adesola Elegbeji.

Meanwhile, in Edo State, the PDP issued a strong appeal to INEC and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, demanding measures to restore public confidence and guarantee the credibility of the August 16 bye-elections in Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency.

The call was made in a statement signed by the Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who said the party was fully prepared and confident of victory, citing the popularity of its candidates and the areas’ traditional PDP support.

However, the PDP raised concerns over the integrity of certain electoral officers, alleging their complicity in irregularities during the 2024 gubernatorial election in the state. The party called for the immediate redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and several Electoral Officers who served in key LGAs, including Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Etsako West, Etsako East, and Akoko Edo.

“We unequivocally demand the immediate redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) due to his ignoble role in the last governorship election,” the statement read. “INEC must meet these demands to boost voter confidence and assure the credibility of the process.”

The PDP maintained that it would not accept any electoral process overseen by officials whose past conduct had undermined the integrity of previous elections.
