ADO-EKITI — A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Segun Akinwumi, has criticised the recent endorsements of Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, for a second term, saying such endorsements from political elites and former governors do not reflect the wishes of the masses and cannot guarantee his re-election in 2026.
Akinwumi, who served as a commissioner under former Governor Ayo Fayose, stated this during a media chat on Wednesday, warning that grassroots discontent with the current administration could derail the governor’s second-term ambition.
“The masses are disappointed and not happy with the current administration,” he said. “The endorsements are coming from political elites who have benefitted from the federal largesse, not from the people bearing the brunt of poor governance.”
He criticised what he described as minimal progress on key infrastructure, particularly the circular road project, and noted that most parts of Ekiti still suffer from deplorable roads and inadequate development.
“No amount of endorsements can drown the dissatisfaction of ordinary Ekiti residents. We are determined to take back the state in 2026,” Akinwumi declared.
PDP Aspirant Ogun Warns Fayose Against Anti-Party Acts
In a related development, a leading Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Mrs. Funmilayo Ogun, has warned ex-Governor Ayo Fayose against actions capable of undermining the party’s unity and chances in the 2026 election.
Speaking during a meeting with PDP council chairmen in Ado-Ekiti, Ogun expressed concern over alleged anti-party tendencies exhibited by some party members, especially those who had previously benefitted from the PDP’s platform.
“Such conduct is not only damaging to the party’s image but demoralising to committed members who are working hard ahead of 2026,” she said.
Ogun urged the PDP’s National Working Committee, led by Iliya Umar Damagun, to take decisive action against individuals sabotaging party efforts, especially as the state gears up for a fiercely contested poll.
She called on former PDP members who have defected to the APC or ADC to return, expressing confidence that the PDP could reclaim power and restore hope to Ekiti people.
“With unity and focus, we will bring smiles back to the faces of Ekiti people,” Ogun stated.
Council Chairmen Pledge Support
Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of Efon Local Government and leader of the PDP Council Chairmen in the state, Ajenaku Olufemi, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to working for the party’s victory in 2026.
“Our structures remain intact. We are prepared and determined to mobilise the grassroots to ensure PDP returns to power in Ekiti,” Olufemi assured.
The political temperature in Ekiti continues to rise, with opposition parties positioning themselves to challenge the ruling APC’s grip on the state ahead of the next governorship election.
