Ego Boyo Clears Air on Quitting Acting, Says It Was Her Personal Choice

Date:

Veteran Nollywood actress and producer, Ego Boyo, has debunked widespread claims that her husband stopped her from acting, stating that her decision to leave the screen was entirely her own.

Speaking in a new interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the 56-year-old clarified that contrary to popular assumptions, she left acting because she found more fulfillment behind the scenes.

“I left acting when I found out that I enjoyed producing more than acting. It was boring,” Boyo said. “The blogs wanted it to be something like my husband banned me from it, they wanted it to be sensational, and it was not.”

Boyo, who rose to national fame in the 1990s through her iconic role in the classic Nigerian TV series Checkmate, said she gradually transitioned to film production after discovering a deeper passion for storytelling through that avenue.

Since stepping away from acting, Boyo has become a respected figure in the Nigerian film industry as a producer, known for backing thoughtful and socially relevant projects.

Her comments come amid ongoing conversations about women’s autonomy and the role of personal choice in the careers of female entertainers in Nigeria.
