Former Barcelona midfielder Carles Perez has been hospitalised in Greece after suffering a dog bite to his genitals while walking his own dog in Thermi, a suburb of Thessaloniki.
The 27-year-old was reportedly trying to separate his pet from another during an altercation when he sustained the injury. He was rushed to a private hospital in Panorama, where he received six stitches for a deep gash.
Perez, who recently joined Aris FC on loan from Celta Vigo, has since developed a soft tissue infection from the bite, according to a club statement on Wednesday.
As a result, he has been ruled out of Aris’ UEFA Conference League qualifier against Araz-Nakhchivan. Manager Marinos Ouzounidis confirmed Perez was originally set to start the match.
“This incident happened but we can’t dwell on it. We’ve worked on alternatives, and I trust the players available to step up,” Ouzounidis said.
Perez made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2019 and has also featured for Roma, Celta Vigo, and Getafe.
