The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has dismissed reports claiming that Osun State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has been suspended.
Chairman of the Conference, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, described the viral story — first published by an online platform on July 30 — as false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public.
In a statement on Thursday, Ogundoyin clarified that no suspension had taken place, and no press conference was held in Ibadan or elsewhere to make such a declaration.
“There was no such suspension. No press conference was held in Ibadan or anywhere else, and no such pronouncement was made by me or any authorised representative of the conference,” he said.
He affirmed that Egbedun remains a respected and active member of the body who has not been found wanting in any way.
Ogundoyin condemned the report, calling it a baseless fabrication lacking credibility. He also stressed that the Conference adheres strictly to due process in all matters, including disciplinary proceedings.
He urged media organisations to verify information before publication, warning that false reports could damage reputations and mislead the public. He further demanded a retraction and public apology from the platform, adding that legal action could follow if the report is not corrected.
“Freedom of the press comes with responsibility. Fake news must be tackled with urgency,” Ogundoyin added.
