A member of the House of Representatives and senior figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has said that former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso remains open to joining the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Jibrin said, “The doors have not closed” on talks between Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, and the APC.
“As far as that is concerned, he has always maintained that his doors are open, our doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility,” he added.
Jibrin noted that resistance within the APC, particularly in Kano, could be slowing the move. “Even within the APC in Kano, you may have a situation where some vested interests won’t want us to come in,” he said.
He described the Kwankwasiyya movement, led by Kwankwaso, as a political force that cannot be ignored.
Jibrin, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, recently met President Bola Tinubu, sparking speculation about his own defection. While he did not confirm any move, he said, “Well, I keep saying everything is a possibility.”
He also stressed that though he is part of the Kwankwasiyya movement, he does not need Kwankwaso’s permission to leave the NNPP. “No, at my age, I think I’m old enough to make decisions for myself,” he said.
In the 2023 presidential election, Kwankwaso polled 1,496,687 votes, finishing fourth, while Tinubu won with 8,794,726 votes.
