Mechanic Jailed Three Years for Stealing Yams in Osogbo

Date:

A 28-year-old auto mechanic, Akeem Jimoh, has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing tubers of yam valued at N35,000 in Osogbo, Osun State.

Jimoh was arraigned before an Osogbo Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to one count of theft. The offence was said to have occurred around 10pm on July 25, 2025, behind Africa Primary School, Ataoja Area, Osogbo.

According to the charge sheet, the stolen items belonged to one Tiamiyu Abegunde. The court heard that the act contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. 2, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

Jimoh, who had no legal representation, admitted to the crime and pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he stole the food items out of hunger.

The police prosecutor, Babatunde Olukokun, told the court that in a confessional statement, Jimoh revealed he had previously served a three-year jail term after standing as surety for a suspect who later absconded.

In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Muibah Olatunji, sentenced him to three years in prison with hard labour, without an option of fine.
