Police Invite El-Rufai, ADC Leaders Over Criminal Allegations

Date:

The Kaduna State Police Command has summoned former governor Nasir El-Rufai and six senior leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous harm.

In a letter dated September 4, 2025, and signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, Uzairu Abdullahi, the ADC chairman was directed to present the seven individuals at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on September 8.

Those invited include El-Rufai, Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (popularly known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (“Mikiya”). The police said the invitation was part of ongoing efforts to preserve law and order in the state.

On the same day the letter was issued, security operatives sealed off the ADC state secretariat in Kaduna, ahead of a scheduled visit by the party’s North-West leadership. The meeting had been planned as a solidarity mission to commiserate with members injured in a violent attack by political thugs the previous week.

Reacting at a press briefing, El-Rufai condemned the police action, describing it as unconstitutional. He said the claimed court order used to justify the shutdown was neither presented nor formally served to the party.

“We want to see that order, and we will challenge it all the way to the Supreme Court,” El-Rufai declared, accusing the police of overreach.

The controversy comes amid heightened political tension in the state. Just last week, suspected thugs disrupted the inauguration of an ADC transition committee, leaving several people injured and properties damaged. Party leaders had accused the police of failing to act during the attack.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government has accused El-Rufai of attempting to destabilise the state’s peace. In an earlier statement, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Shehu Shuaibu, warned that anyone undermining stability, including the former governor, would be held accountable.
