A former senator representing Osun West, Mudashiru Hussein, has formally declared his interest in contesting the 2026 Osun governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hussein, who hails from Ejigbo, announced his aspiration on Tuesday at the APC state secretariat in Osogbo after a meeting with members of the State Working Committee and other party stakeholders.
The ex-lawmaker served in the Senate between 2011 and 2015 and earlier represented Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency of Lagos State in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007. He has also held positions as a Federal Commissioner and acting Secretary to the State Government in Osun.
Addressing party members and supporters, Hussein said his wealth of legislative and administrative experience positioned him to lead the state.
“In terms of experience, I swear to the Almighty God, I have what it takes to govern this state. Having served in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and in various administrative capacities, what else do you want as governor? If it’s experience, I have it,” he declared.
He expressed confidence that the APC would reclaim power in Osun in 2026, adding that he was prepared to support any of the twelve aspirants if not chosen as the party’s flag bearer.
“All of us, the twelve aspirants, are qualified. Whoever the party hierarchy chooses, we are bound by the Constitution and rules of the party to support them,” Hussein said.
The APC state chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, welcomed the growing interest among aspirants, saying it reflected the party’s strength and readiness to challenge incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Other aspirants who have declared interest in the APC ticket include the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji; former Senate Committee chairman, Babajide Omoworare; lawyer Dotun Babayemi; former Osun Deputy Governor, Benedict Alabi; businessman Akin Ogunbiyi; and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Adegoke.
The governorship election in Osun State is scheduled for August 8, 2026.
