Vice President Kashim Shettima will depart Abuja on Saturday, May 3, for Libreville, Gabon, where he is expected to represent Nigeria at the inauguration of Gabon’s president-elect, Brice Oligui Nguema.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Shettima is attending the ceremony on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. His spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed the trip in a statement, noting that Nigeria continues to support peaceful democratic transitions across Africa.
Nkwocha highlighted the country’s strategic interest in promoting democratic governance and regional stability, particularly in Central Africa.
Vice President Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria after the inauguration.
Brice Nguema, who has served as Gabon’s interim leader since August 2023 following a coup, secured a landslide victory in the April 12 presidential election. According to final results from Gabon’s Constitutional Court, he received 58,074 votes—94.85 per cent of the total ballots cast.
Nguema defeated seven other contenders, including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, who finished a distant second with just three per cent of the vote.
