Desperate Candidates Lobby Senators, Traditional Rulers Ahead of 2025 Sports Federation Elections

Date:

As the 2025 Sports Federation elections draw closer, some aspirants seeking fresh mandates or re-election have reportedly resorted to lobbying senators and influential traditional rulers in what has been described as a desperate move to secure backing from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

This development emerged on Friday, coinciding with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) release of its election timetable for new board members expected later this month.

Instead of focusing on grassroots mobilization and state-level campaigns, some candidates are said to be traveling across the country, seeking political and royal endorsements to strengthen their positions.

A source close to the NSC described the trend as “unfortunate,” adding that many aspirants are underestimating the current administration’s resolve to prioritize competence and innovation over influence.

“It is sad that some candidates are bypassing the grassroots and heading straight to senators and traditional rulers, believing they can influence the NSC,” the source said. “But I’m certain they’ll be disappointed, because this NSC leadership is not likely to yield to such lobbying.”

The source cited one particular federation—currently under government scrutiny for underperformance and controversies over the past four years—whose candidate allegedly vowed to push through using high-level political connections.

“But the NSC leadership is no longer interested in board members who rely solely on government funding,” the source added. “They are looking for individuals who can attract corporate sponsorship and bring value to sports development. Those trying to manipulate the system with sweet talk and backdoor lobbying will find that those days are gone.”

The coming weeks will reveal whether this shift in approach by the NSC signals a true break from the past or if old habits will persist beneath the surface.
