Enugu City International Marathon Debuts Saturday, Set to Become Annual Event

Date:

The Enugu City International Marathon, certified by World Athletics, will debut on Saturday across major streets in the Coal City, with plans already in place to make it a yearly event, organisers confirmed during a press briefing on Friday.

Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu Jr, announced at the World Press Conference in Enugu that Governor Peter Mbah has approved the marathon as an annual fixture, citing its economic and social benefits to the state.

“This is going to be a continuous process,” Ekweremadu said. “We know that the economy of our state will be boosted with such an international event.”

He also explained that the state chose a marathon because it actively engages a large number of youth simultaneously, thereby promoting mass participation and community spirit.

Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Company—the event’s consultant—praised the Enugu State government’s commitment to sports development. “Governor Mbah has continually shown he has a road map for sports development in the state,” she noted.

Friday’s briefing was attended by several top dignitaries, underscoring the significance of the race—the first of its kind in South Eastern Nigeria. These included the Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Solomon Ogba; Athletics Federation of Nigeria President, Tonobok Okowa; World Athletics Representative and Technical Director, Yusuf Ali; and veteran actor Nkem Owo.

Over 3,000 athletes are expected to compete in the 42km marathon and the 10km race. Governor Mbah himself will take part in the 10km run, committing to finish the race alongside thousands of other participants.
