BENIN CITY – A non-political organization, Fans Golden Club International (FGCI), has called on the Edo State Government to integrate traditional rulers into the state’s security framework as part of efforts to curb the rising wave of kidnappings and killings, especially in Esanland, located in the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The group made this appeal in a statement jointly signed by its President, Sir Thomas Okoudoh, and Secretary, Dr. Alex Orukpe, on Thursday in Benin City. FGCI commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for the proactive steps taken so far to address insecurity in the state, including his anti-cultism and anti-kidnapping measures.
However, the group also condemned the recent killing of 16 suspected kidnappers in Uromi, describing it as unjust and a potential source of unrest.
“We condemn in strong terms the killings of 16 suspected kidnappers in Uromi, as it is totally out of place to take the life of anybody without just cause,” the statement read. “We also thank Governor Okpebholo for his swift intervention in calming the tension that followed.”
FGCI emphasized the need for a more grassroots-oriented approach to security, advocating for the recruitment of local hunters into the Edo State Vigilante Network. The group noted that hunters’ familiarity with community terrain and forest routes could play a vital role in combating crime effectively.
“We encourage the state government to expedite the recruitment of hunters and vigilante groups into the state’s security network,” the statement continued. “However, we urge that they be properly profiled, especially regarding arms handling and monitoring.”
The group further stressed the importance of involving traditional rulers, whom it described as “custodians of our traditions and close to the people,” in the state’s security efforts.
In addition, FGCI urged the government to strengthen border surveillance and conduct thorough checks on individuals and groups entering Edo State to prevent the infiltration of criminal elements.
Registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), FGCI says its mission includes promoting the welfare of its members, the Esan people, and contributing meaningfully to national development.
