Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has restated his administration’s firm stance against the sale and consumption of liquor and other intoxicating substances, reinforcing his commitment to upholding moral and religious values across the state.
The governor made this declaration during the official commissioning of the reconstructed Shagari Jumu’at Mosque, a historic religious site associated with the late Islamic scholar Sheikh Abubakar Mahmoud Gummi.
Governor Aliyu praised the Sokoto State Hisbah Board for its recent operations, which included the confiscation and destruction of alcoholic beverages. He described the actions as a reflection of his government’s resolve to combat social vices.
“I commend the Hisbah Board for its diligent efforts in purging our society of immoral practices,” Aliyu stated. He assured that the Hisbah Corps would continue to operate strictly within legal frameworks and with full respect for human rights.
He also appealed to the public to support the board’s efforts, noting that such cooperation would boost the agency’s effectiveness and professional conduct.
On religious infrastructure, Governor Aliyu announced that 63 Jumu’at mosques across Sokoto are undergoing reconstruction. He highlighted that the state government also provides monthly financial support to mosques and offers stipends to Imams, their deputies, and Muazzins to support religious activities.
The governor urged mosque leaders to uphold cleanliness and ensure the proper maintenance of their facilities.
“Our administration remains fully committed to implementing projects that have direct and meaningful impact on the lives of our people,” he added.
The commissioning event was attended by former Deputy Governor Barrister Mukhtar Shagari, who lauded the reconstruction efforts and thanked Governor Aliyu for preserving the legacy of a significant religious landmark.
Also speaking on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaid described the renovation of the Shagari mosque as a noble initiative that promotes spiritual growth and strengthens community unity.
