Oba of Lagos Urges Stronger Nigeria–UK Ties on Security, Investment

Date:

LAGOS – The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has called for stronger bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, particularly in the areas of security collaboration and business investment.

He made the appeal on Thursday while receiving officers of the British Royal Navy at his Idunganran Palace in Lagos.

Oba Akiolu said the call aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable development. He noted that Nigeria and Britain share a long history, dating back to the colonial era when the British took control of Lagos from the Portuguese.

Reflecting on the nation’s journey since independence in 1960, the monarch acknowledged the challenges Nigeria has faced in its bid to achieve socio-economic advancement. However, he expressed confidence in the current administration’s efforts to return the country to its rightful place among developed nations.

On the issue of insecurity, Oba Akiolu stressed the need for global cooperation, stating that terrorism and insurgency have no place in today’s world. He urged Britain to deepen its security ties with Nigeria and support peaceful coexistence.

The traditional ruler also encouraged British investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria, citing the country’s vast natural resources and skilled manpower.

Rear Admiral Steve Dainton, Senior Directing Staff at the Royal College of Defence Studies, led the visiting British delegation. He explained that the visit was part of a one-year defence training programme involving several African countries, including Nigeria, which will conclude in July.

Rear Admiral Dainton said the team visited the palace to receive royal blessings and learn more about the history of Lagos from Oba Akiolu, especially given his experience as a former senior police officer.

The highlight of the visit was a question-and-answer session between the monarch and the British security officials.
