Villarreal Secures Champions League Spot with Thrilling Win Over Barcelona

Date:

Villarreal confirmed their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after an exciting 3-2 victory against newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona on Sunday.

Despite Barcelona’s recent league title celebrations, Villarreal produced a strong performance to spoil the party at Barcelona’s Olympic stadium, potentially their last game there before moving back to the renovated Camp Nou next season. The hosts took the lead through Fermin Lopez, but Villarreal fought back with goals from Santi Comesana and Tajon Buchanan, securing the win. Barcelona’s young star Lamine Yamal scored a stunning equalizer, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the first home league defeat for Barcelona in 2025. The league trophy was presented to Barcelona at the end of the match, marking their 28th La Liga crown.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid edged a 2-0 win over nine-man Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Kylian Mbappe, who netted his 29th league goal of the season, opened the scoring after Sevilla was reduced to nine men due to two red cards for Loic Bade and Isaac Romero. Jude Bellingham later sealed the victory for Madrid in what is coach Carlo Ancelotti’s penultimate match in charge.

Atletico Madrid continued their strong form with a 4-1 demolition of Real Betis. Julian Alvarez starred with two goals and an assist as Diego Simeone’s side moved up to third place, widening the gap over Villarreal’s closest rivals.

In the relegation battle, Leganes boosted their survival hopes with a vital 1-0 win at already relegated Las Palmas, thanks to an early strike by Dani Raba. The Madrid club, currently 18th, remain two points from safety heading into their final match against Real Valladolid. Espanyol’s 2-0 defeat by Osasuna leaves the Catalan side dangerously close to the drop zone. They face Las Palmas next weekend and need a win to ensure their top-flight status.

With the league wrapping up soon, the race for European qualification and survival promises a dramatic final day.
