ABUJA – A group of supporters of Peter Obi from Nigeria’s North-Central region has issued a strong warning against any potential political alliance between the former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, citing concerns about ethics and public perception.
Operating under the name North-Central Region of Nigeria Supporters for Mr. Peter Obi, the group declared that a joint single-term ticket with Atiku would undermine Obi’s credibility and the vision of a “new Nigeria” his campaign represents.
In a statement jointly signed by Chairman Bitrus Samuel and Secretary Murtala Ndagi, the group expressed deep reservations about Atiku’s political history, which they described as marred by controversy and allegations of misconduct.
“Mr. Obi, your steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and the upliftment of the Nigerian populace stands in contrast to the controversies associated with Mr. Abubakar,” the statement read.
The group referenced past allegations of financial impropriety involving Atiku, including a Senate report that once recommended his prosecution. They warned that partnering with him could erode public trust, especially among Obi’s core supporters in the North-Central region.
“Many of us have placed our faith in you as a leader who embodies integrity and accountability. Accepting a vice-presidential role under Atiku’s banner could create disillusionment among your supporters,” the group noted.
The statement also raised concerns about Atiku’s alleged involvement in financial scandals in the United States and broader criticisms of his record in governance and security.
“In a nation grappling with insecurity, the perception of a leader with a controversial past could have significant implications for our collective stability,” they cautioned.
While acknowledging that such an alliance might offer political leverage, the group urged Obi to reject short-term political gains in favor of his long-standing principles.
“The path to true leadership often requires difficult choices. We hope Mr. Obi will choose a path that aligns with the values we hold dear,” the statement added.
Reaffirming their support, the group praised Obi as a symbol of reform and clean governance, pledging continued backing for his leadership vision.
“We stand united in our quest for a better Nigeria,” they declared.
