Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed his readiness to leave the club immediately without seeking any compensation if the board or fans decide he is no longer the right person to lead the team. His remarks came after United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday in Bilbao.
Brennan Johnson’s decisive goal just before halftime sealed a tough loss for United, who have endured a difficult season. This defeat compounds their struggles, as the team is set to finish in their lowest league position since their relegation in 1974.
Despite the setbacks, an emotional Amorim affirmed his belief in his ability to turn things around since taking charge in November, succeeding Erik ten Hag. “If the board and the fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation,” Amorim said. However, he insisted, “But I will not quit. I’m really confident on my job. And as you can see, I will not change nothing in the way I do things.”
The Portuguese coach avoided discussing his future in detail, emphasizing the need for the team to first cope with the pain of losing the final. “What I can say is that I think it was clear we were the better team but then we managed not to score again and that is really hard to win football matches but the guys tried everything to win the game,” he added. “In the future we will have time to assess everything.”
When Amorim took over, Manchester United were still within reach of Champions League qualification. However, the club now trails fifth-placed Chelsea by 27 points, a gap that highlights their current struggles.
“We need to understand that it is tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” Amorim said. “But we have to use the other side. If we have more time, we have more time to think, to work during the week and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”
As the season closes on a disappointing note, attention now turns to how Amorim and Manchester United will regroup ahead of next season.
