Amid rising speculation over internal discontent and potential defection within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu, dispelling reports of dissatisfaction and political unrest within their ranks.
The CPC, one of the legacy parties that merged to form the APC in 2013, had former President Muhammadu Buhari as its figurehead. However, following the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), concerns emerged about a possible wave of disaffection among CPC loyalists.
Addressing the issue on Wednesday, prominent CPC leaders issued a joint resolution categorically denying the rumours. They described such narratives as “baseless and mischievous,” affirming their continued allegiance to the APC and its current leadership.
“We, the undersigned leaders and dedicated members of the former CPC, instrumental in the historic merger that birthed the APC, reaffirm our unwavering loyalty to our great party and express our strong solidarity with the administration of President Tinubu,” the resolution stated.
Signatories to the resolution include former Nasarawa Governor, Senator Umaru Al-Makura; former Katsina Governor and ex-House Speaker, Aminu Masari; former Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu; Senator Ibrahim Musa; Senator Mustafa Salihu; Farouk Aliyu; and Dr. Nasiru Argungu, among others.
The group emphasized their full endorsement of President Tinubu’s ongoing economic and governance reforms, acknowledging the challenges these policies may pose while urging Nigerians to remain patient as the reforms take effect.
While recognizing that some party members may feel sidelined, the CPC bloc encouraged aggrieved individuals to utilize internal party mechanisms for redress rather than seeking external alternatives or spreading disunity.
They also called on the APC leadership to deepen engagement and communication within the party to foster inclusiveness and strengthen internal cohesion.
“The CPC family remains a crucial pillar of the APC and will continue to play a responsible role in its growth and in Nigeria’s progress,” the statement concluded.
This strong declaration comes at a pivotal moment for the APC, as it seeks to solidify its base ahead of future political contests and navigate complex internal dynamics in the post-Buhari era.
