FCT Minister Orders Sealing of PDP Secretariat, 4,793 Other Properties Over Ground Rent Defaults

Date:

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed that the national secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, along with 4,793 other properties revoked by the FCTA in March 2025, be sealed starting Monday, May 26, 2025.

This announcement was made during a press briefing by the FCT Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, alongside key FCTA officials.

The revoked properties, located in districts including Central Area, Garki, Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape, reverted to the FCTA due to unpaid ground rent spanning one to 43 years. The government is set to take possession without regard to current occupants, strictly following existing laws.

Among the affected properties is the PDP’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza and its new headquarters under construction in Central Area. However, the FCTA clarified that the Wadata Plaza property is registered under an individual, not the PDP directly.

The affected properties include government institutions and private organizations such as the Nigerian Postal Authority, Central Bank of Nigeria, NNPC, National Universities Commission, and several federal agencies.

Title holders with ground rent defaults between one and 10 years were given a 21-day grace period to pay, with compliance records being compiled for further action.

The PDP has condemned the revocation and sealing plan, with its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, calling it an attempt to stifle opposition and threaten democracy. He stated that both the current and new secretariat properties have had their Right of Occupancy revoked.

The FCTA maintains that ground rent payment is mandatory under law, due annually on January 1, and that revocation procedures are legally sound.
