Ten Hag Named New Bayer Leverkusen Head Coach

Date:

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, the German champions announced on Monday.

Ten Hag takes over from Xabi Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic domestic double in the 2023/24 season—winning both the Bundesliga and German Cup—before being unveiled on Sunday as the new Real Madrid coach. Alonso steps in at Madrid following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

Ten Hag, a Dutch tactician, parted ways with Manchester United in October 2024 after a mixed spell that saw him lift both the League Cup and FA Cup, but ultimately fall short of consistent success at Old Trafford.

He now takes on a fresh challenge with Leverkusen, aiming to build on Alonso’s legacy and sustain the club’s recent domestic dominance.
