Strange Illness Claims Six Children in Imo Community, Authorities Launch Urgent Response

Date:

ABUJA – A mysterious disease outbreak in Mbutu community, located in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, has claimed the lives of at least six children aged between 1 and 6 years within the past week.

In response to the alarming situation, authorities have taken immediate action to contain the spread. The Executive Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, Barr. Iheukwumere Henry Alaribe, has ordered the temporary closure of all nursery, primary, and secondary schools in Mbutu for seven days.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Dike Godspower, the decision was made to “prevent the spread of the disease and ensure the safety of our children.” As an added precaution, children from the community will not participate in the 2025 Children’s Day celebrations scheduled for May 27.

Efforts to address the outbreak are already underway. Health teams from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Department of Disease Prevention and Control at the Imo State Ministry of Health, and local health officials are actively investigating the source and nature of the illness.

The statement also advised parents to ensure their children are vaccinated, noting that immunization remains a critical measure in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Mbutu Community, Dr. Leo Nwaigwe, has urged residents to remain calm, assuring that the relevant health bodies have been notified and are taking necessary steps.

“I have made an official report and appeal for intervention,” Nwaigwe said in a public message. “The Imo State Ministry of Health and its Epidemiology Division will visit the Mbutu Health Centre today for assessment and possible solutions.”

He also advised parents to limit the movement of children between villages to help contain the disease.

“This is not a time for panic. With swift action and prayers, we will bring this situation under control,” the mayor added.

Local authorities have pledged to provide continuous updates as more information becomes available and as efforts to contain the outbreak intensify.
