NEMA Confirms Abuja Explosion as Failed Suicide Bombing Attempt

Date:

ABUJA — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that the explosion that rocked the outskirts of Abuja on Monday afternoon was caused by a suicide bombing attempt.

In a statement released Tuesday, NEMA disclosed that the incident occurred around 1:47 p.m. when a lone individual wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) tried to gain unauthorized access into the Mogadishu Army Cantonment along the busy Mararaba-Nyanya expressway. The device detonated prematurely, killing the bomber instantly and injuring one passerby.

Emergency and security responders swiftly moved to the scene, which had already been cordoned off by heavily armed military personnel. NEMA’s rapid response team worked alongside the Military, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in managing the situation.

“Preliminary information indicated that the suicide bomber was attempting to infiltrate the barracks when the IED detonated,” NEMA stated.

The injured civilian was promptly evacuated by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to the National Hospital for urgent medical attention. Forensic teams have also commenced investigations to gather evidence and determine the full circumstances surrounding the failed attack.

The entire emergency operation was concluded by 5:29 p.m., with NEMA assuring the public of its continued collaboration with security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

This incident marks a concerning reminder of security threats in the capital and underscores the need for continued vigilance and intelligence-sharing among agencies. Authorities are urging residents to report suspicious movements and cooperate with law enforcement to prevent similar occurrences.
