Janet Jackson: “I Don’t Consider Myself an Icon”

Date:

American singer Janet Jackson has said she does not see herself as a musical icon, despite receiving the Icon Award at the 51st annual American Music Awards.

Speaking at the event held on May 26, 2025, at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, the award-winning singer reflected on her family’s humble beginnings and passion for music, stating that fame was never their goal.

“I don’t consider myself to be an icon,” Jackson said. “My family, myself — our dreams were never to be famous. We weren’t raised like that. We always had special love for music, dancing and singing.”

She added that fame came only as a result of consistent hard work and dedication, not as something they actively pursued.

The Jackson family, originally from Gary, Indiana, is widely known for its influence on American pop music. Several family members achieved global success, most notably Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, both of whom enjoyed acclaimed solo careers after the rise of the Jackson 5.

Janet’s remarks at the awards ceremony offered a modest and heartfelt perspective on her legacy, underscoring her focus on the art rather than the accolades.
