Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Chief Bode George, has declared the party “resurrected” following the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, George dismissed speculation that the PDP was in decline, describing the party as a resilient political force with deep foundations.
“We have already done the resurrection today. An iroko tree doesn’t die. This party is an iroko tree because the tap root is so deep,” George said.
The NEC meeting, held for the first time in over a year — the last being on April 18, 2024 — had been repeatedly postponed due to internal divisions and leadership tussles. Its eventual convening marked a turning point for the main opposition party, which has faced growing public scrutiny over its unity and direction.
George described the meeting as a moment of reflection and reckoning for the PDP. “The PDP NEC meeting was the realisation of the failures and things that we have done. This party is not a party for one individual. No individual can claim ownership of this party,” he stated.
He criticised some party members for deviating from the founding fathers’ vision, accusing them of pursuing personal interests over party unity. “We have learnt a lesson, and that lesson was the beginning of the meeting yesterday and today. What it reminded me of was the peak of our existence as a political party. I left the chambers feeling reinvigorated,” he added.
George also echoed the sentiments of BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, who, during the NEC meeting, called on party members to embody selflessness.
“We must perpetually build on selfless leaders. We must have more selfless leaders and less selfish leaders. That was resonating and what he said today,” George concluded.
