President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will not abandon victims of the devastating flood disaster that struck Mokwa in Niger State. In a statement released on Friday night via his official X account, Tinubu expressed deep concern over the tragedy and extended condolences to affected families.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the good people of Niger State at this difficult time,” the president wrote. He added that upon receiving initial reports, he immediately ordered the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre and was fully briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the scale of the disaster.
Torrential rainfall on Wednesday night triggered flash floods that swept through the market community in Mokwa, washing away more than 50 homes. As of Friday evening, the death toll had risen to 115, according to reports by AFP citing the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). Dozens of residents are still missing, while many have been displaced.
Tinubu confirmed that search-and-rescue operations are ongoing and that relevant federal agencies have been deployed to support state efforts. Relief materials, including food and shelter supplies, are being delivered to the affected areas.
“We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” he stated. He further pledged that the Federal Government would continue to work closely with the Niger State Government to coordinate a swift, compassionate, and effective response that prioritizes human lives and accelerates recovery.
The president also directed security agencies to assist with emergency operations and tasked NEMA and the Emergency Response Centre with providing continuous updates.
“In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience, and shared humanity,” Tinubu added, urging all Nigerians to keep the people of Mokwa in their thoughts and prayers.
