PDP Reaffirms Leadership Role, Rejects APC’s One-Party State Agenda

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition and a defender of democracy following a successful 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba highlighted the party’s unity and organizational strength demonstrated during the May 27 NEC meeting. He emphasized the establishment of two key committees—the Zoning Committee, led by Bayelsa Governor Duoye Diri, and the National Convention Committee, chaired by Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri—as vital to inclusive party processes.

Ologunagba criticized President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state, which he said undermines democratic principles. He dismissed recent political defections as distractions and insisted the 2027 elections will serve as a referendum on the APC’s failures, including insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.

The PDP spokesman also condemned the Tinubu administration’s $24.5 billion loan request to cushion subsidy removal effects, calling it contradictory and urging the National Assembly to scrutinize the loan carefully.

Despite harsh criticism, Ologunagba stressed that PDP’s opposition is constructive, aimed at Nigeria’s success through dialogue and consensus. He assured that the party is preparing to offer Nigerians a credible alternative based on democratic values and economic recovery ahead of 2027.
