The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the attempted assassination of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the incident as a direct attack on democracy and national stability.
According to a statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the Senator’s family residence in Obeiba-Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Citing information from counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, HURIWA said that the Senator’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Yakubu Ovanja, confirmed the incident was reported to law enforcement. Around 1:00 a.m., at least three armed individuals stormed the property with cutlasses and firearms, damaging windows and other property.
Thanks to a swift response from officers of the Okehi Police Division, the assailants fled before causing further harm. No casualties were reported, but no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing. The motive for the attack remains unknown, according to police sources.
In a strong reaction, HURIWA demanded a comprehensive investigation and the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. The group called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to take all necessary measures to protect the Senator.
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is one of the most vocal advocates for constitutional democracy and equal opportunities in Nigeria,” the statement said. “Her safety must be guaranteed at all costs. This attack is a threat not only to her life but also to democratic values in the country.”
HURIWA also recalled that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously alleged threats to her life. While the organization could not independently verify those claims, it urged security agencies to act swiftly and with neutrality to prevent future occurrences.
The group further advised political actors to avoid violence and resolve disagreements through legal and peaceful means to maintain political stability.
As of press time, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, had yet to issue a public statement on the incident.
