OWERRI – Former Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has warned that Nigeria’s economic challenges will persist unless the country undergoes political restructuring.
Speaking at Anandugba in Isu Local Government Area of Imo State, Ohakim delivered a paper titled “Rebuilding Nigeria’s Troubled Economy: Practical Insight into the Challenges and Solutions.”
According to him, the nation’s economic woes are deeply rooted in its political structure.
“Our efforts at finding a solution to our myriad economic problems will continue to fail to give the needed results if we do not restructure the country politically,” he said.
Ohakim argued that previous attempts by successive administrations to address economic issues have amounted to temporary fixes aimed at avoiding public backlash rather than offering lasting solutions.
He also emphasized the need for a government with the political will to act beyond populist measures.
“The solution will lie in having a government that will not play politics with the future of the youths,” he stated.
He further noted that good governance is not limited to infrastructure but includes intangible elements such as empathy and responsible leadership.
On the way forward, Ohakim called for a new structure to help Nigerians adapt to the realities of a rapidly changing world.
“The urgency of our situation demands a new normal, a clear and different structure, through which our people will be organised to face the changing world,” he concluded.
