Spectator Dies After Falling from Stands During Nations League Final in Munich

Date:

A tragic incident occurred during the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, as a spectator died after falling from the stands, UEFA confirmed.

The fan fell from the central tier during the first period of extra time, landing in the press box located in the lower tier. Paramedics and police quickly responded to the scene, but despite their efforts, the fan sadly passed away.

A UEFA spokesperson described the situation as a “medical emergency” and confirmed the death of the supporter during the match.

Both teams expressed deep condolences following the match, which Portugal won 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular and extra time.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, addressed the incident at the post-match press conference, saying, “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life.”

A representative of the Portuguese side also conveyed sympathy, noting the tragic event “casts a shadow on our victory today.” Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez described the news as “extremely sad.”

The fan is estimated to have fallen about eight metres, but the exact circumstances of the fall remain unclear. Investigations into the cause are ongoing.
