Wike Urges Unity as PDP Battles Internal Crisis

Date:

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will overcome its ongoing challenges and reclaim its place in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Wike made this statement on Monday while hosting a gathering of party stakeholders under the banner of “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP” in Abuja. The group comprised party leaders from all 36 states and the FCT, including former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), as well as PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Philip Aduda.

In his remarks, Wike praised those present as true loyalists of the party and urged them to work towards unity and survival of the PDP, instead of fueling divisions. “All of you here are those who are committed to the survival of our party, not just talking on television or in the newspapers,” he said.

Highlighting the controversial role of the G5 Governors—of which he was a member—Wike argued that their decisions during the 2023 election cycle helped prevent a national crisis. “It doesn’t matter who the beneficiary was, but the right thing had to be done, and we still stand by that decision,” he maintained.

He further emphasised the need for internal democracy and strict adherence to the party’s constitution, warning against the dangers of impunity, greed, and ego within the PDP. “Let us not allow greed; let us not allow ego to kill our party,” Wike cautioned.

Also speaking at the meeting, former Governor Samuel Ortom defended Wike’s contributions to the PDP, stating that no one had done more for the party. Ortom also praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Wike as FCT Minister, noting it reflects a desire to avoid a one-party system in the country.

“The PDP made a lot of mistakes, and that is why we are where we are today,” Ortom admitted, urging stakeholders to reflect and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
