Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stirred political speculation following a cryptic Instagram post on Wednesday, hinting at dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s current leadership and possibly signaling a return to active politics.
Sharing a reflective photo from a past meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Jonathan wrote: “Since our current leaders are pretending to sleep, we pray that we will get our good leadership back in 2027; your choice will determine the betterment of our future.”
The post, which attracted over 4,200 likes, triggered a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some viewed it as a subtle jab at the current administration, others interpreted it as a hint at Jonathan’s possible interest in the 2027 presidential race.
One supporter commented: “Your Excellency sir, we are 100 per cent with you.” Another hailed him as the “best president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria till date.”
Meanwhile, Jonathan, speaking at the African Conference on Agricultural Technologies (ACAT) in Kigali, Rwanda, on Tuesday, urged African governments to support farmers by improving access to affordable credit. He stressed the need to derisk agricultural lending, noting that strict collateral requirements hinder the sector’s growth.
“African governments must be deliberate with their policies towards promoting agriculture and incentivising farmers,” he said. “Without government support, it will be difficult to produce enough food for our population.”
He also called on African Central Banks to develop models that would encourage commercial banks to lend to farmers, citing their key role in agricultural financing.
