ABUJA — In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, the Hope Aglow Charity Foundation has called on students of Bingham University, Nasarawa, and Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Rivers State, to embrace the waste-to-wealth initiative as a solution to plastic pollution.
Led by Dr. Cynthia Amaka Obiorah, an Associate Professor of Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment, the foundation advocated for sustainable practices under this year’s theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution.” Dr. Obiorah emphasized the dangers of plastic waste and introduced a sixth “R” in waste management: Regenerate wealth.
She said, “Plastic pollution poses grave threats to health and the environment. Students must act by adopting practices that transform waste into economic value.”
At Bingham University, Dr. Desmond Okocha, Dean of Communications and State Coordinator of UNA-Nigeria, urged students to take responsibility for environmental protection. Dr. James Bwala, also of Bingham, highlighted tree planting as a key environmental strategy.
In Rivers State, Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic’s Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Michael Saro, pledged institutional support, while JCI-KENPOLY President Green Doosia called for collective action, stressing that “we all own the environment.”
