New Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has thrown his support behind Neymar, describing the forward as “a very important player” in his plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with the South American football federation on Thursday, the Italian tactician said Neymar still has time to get back to full fitness and contribute meaningfully to Brazil’s campaign.
“He must prepare well and he has the time to do that,” Ancelotti said. “He’s a very important player for us regarding the World Cup.”
The 33-year-old, who recently extended his contract with boyhood club Santos until the end of the year, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. Since rejoining the Brazilian side, Neymar has featured in just 12 matches over five months, scoring three goals.
Despite his absence, Brazil — the five-time world champions — secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay earlier this month.
Neymar, who remains Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, was not included in Ancelotti’s first squad announced at the end of May.
