Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has stirred controversy by claiming that many gospel artists are in the music industry primarily for financial gain.
In a recent episode of Hip TV‘s Trending programme, hosted by Pascal, Spyro made the bold assertion that there is no distinction between gospel artists and their secular counterparts, as both groups perform for money.
He stated, “The people that claim to be gospel artists or gospel ministers are just artists—they are in the business to make money just like us in the Afrobeats industry.”
Spyro also shared his thoughts on the challenges female artists face in the music industry, praising Tems for maintaining her dignity and success despite the pressures.
“There is a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is holding it down decently yet she is one of the biggest [female artists] in the world right now. She is decent. She has it together,” Spyro noted.
He went on to say, “Sometimes, I’m just like, how is she able to do this? We should put Tems out there for our young ladies to be looking up to as a role model.”
Spyro’s comments have sparked conversations around the dynamics of the Nigerian music industry, particularly regarding the motivations of gospel artists and the pressure on women in the field.
