LAGOS — The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has wrapped up its mega rally ahead of the July 12 local council elections, urging voters to support the party’s candidates across the state.
Speaking at the Lagos Central Senatorial District rally on Tuesday, State APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, charged party members to intensify mobilisation efforts. He emphasised APC’s track record in promoting development and business-friendly policies in Lagos.
Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Tajudeen Olusi, also addressed the gathering, appealing to ethnic communities in the state to rally behind the APC. He said their support would be vital for continued progress in Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, criticising the delay in implementing the Local Council Administrative Law.
CHSR President, Alex Omotehinse, who led the protest, described the delay as unconstitutional and politically motivated. He stressed that laws signed by the governor must be implemented immediately unless stated otherwise.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the House, Abiodun Tobun, who represents Epe Constituency I, assured protesters that their concerns would be forwarded to relevant authorities for prompt attention.
Also in Lagos, two civil society organisations—ActionAid Nigeria and Inspired Youth Network—urged young people to fully participate in the local council elections.
At a pre-election forum themed “Strengthening Youth Political Participation in Lagos Local Council Election”, Judith Gbagidi, Governance Specialist at ActionAid Nigeria, noted that despite making up over 60 per cent of the state’s population, young people under 35 occupy less than 15 per cent of local council positions.
Oluwatoyin Adejokun, speaking on behalf of Inspired Youth Network Executive Director Ayomikun Olugbode, emphasised the need for consistent youth engagement in politics beyond election seasons. She urged youths to embrace long-term political involvement to shape policies affecting their future.
