French international Theo Hernandez has completed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, but his departure from AC Milan was marked by a pointed farewell message that took aim at the club’s leadership.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday, Hernandez, 27, expressed his love for the club and its supporters, while openly criticising recent decisions made by Milan’s hierarchy, currently under American ownership group RedBird Capital. Milan endured a turbulent 2023/24 season, finishing eighth in Serie A amid growing discontent from fans.
“Milan has always been my priority,” Hernandez wrote. “But, unfortunately, not everything depends on one person. The direction the club has taken and some recent decisions do not reflect the values or ambition that brought me here.”
Hernandez joined Milan in 2019 from Real Madrid and went on to make 262 appearances, scoring 34 goals. During his time with the Rossoneri, he won the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup, becoming a fan favourite for his dynamic play on the left flank.
In his farewell note, the versatile left-back thanked his coaches and teammates, reserving special praise for former technical director Paolo Maldini, who left the club in 2023.
“I thank every coach who believed in me,” he wrote, “especially Paolo Maldini for his closeness, vision and leadership.”
Hernandez also addressed Milan fans directly, saying: “Feeling your support was a privilege that I will never forget and will carry in my heart forever. I am leaving with my head held high, with a full heart, and with the hope that very soon Milan will return to the place it deserves. Milan will always be a part of me.”
Milan’s instability in recent seasons has seen the club go through three managers last term alone. They have now turned to Massimiliano Allegri, returning for a second spell in charge, in hopes of restoring stability and competitiveness.
Hernandez’s move to Al-Hilal continues a growing trend of European stars opting for the Saudi Pro League, with the defender expected to play a key role in the club’s ambitious plans for continental dominance.
