Emeka Ugwuonye, the legal counsel representing May Edochie in her ongoing marital dispute with Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, has officially withdrawn from the case.
In a statement released via his law firm, Due Process Advocate (DPA), Ugwuonye cited persistent cyberbullying and harassment from May’s fanbase—popularly known as “May Nation”—as the reason for terminating the legal partnership.
According to Ugwuonye, what began as a mission to seek justice for May following her marital breakdown quickly turned hostile, with his staff facing daily online abuse. Surprisingly, he noted that the harassment from May’s fans was even more intense than what they experienced from supporters of Yul Edochie and his alleged second wife, Judy Austin.
“The hostile environment fostered by certain individuals within the ‘May Nation’ group made it untenable for us to continue effective representation,” the statement read. “My staff face daily abuse from May’s supporters, having already endured similar attacks from Yul’s supporters.”
He added that May’s inability to rein in the increasingly toxic behavior of some of her fans clashed with the dedication and resources required to continue handling her case.
Despite stepping down, Ugwuonye reaffirmed his respect for May Edochie, describing her as “a remarkable individual and a victim of betrayal and forced polygamy.” He assured that DPA will assist in transitioning the case to any new legal team she appoints.
The development adds a new layer of complexity to the public saga between Yul and May Edochie, which has drawn significant attention across social media.
