Organised Labour Rejects Ogun Governor’s Proposal, Strike Continues

Date:

Organised Labour in Ogun State has rejected proposals put forward by Governor Dapo Abiodun aimed at resolving the ongoing indefinite strike over unpaid contributory pension deductions and other grievances.

In a communique released on Friday night and signed by representatives of 25 affiliate unions, the labour unions said they were dissatisfied with the government’s response following a seven-hour emergency meeting held in Abeokuta.

The unions listed key unresolved issues, including the N82 billion backlog in contributory pension deductions, implementation of a new minimum wage, eight years of unpaid leave allowances, non-payment of consequential pension adjustments, and the suspension of staff promotions for 2023 and 2024.

“The Council-in-session is displeased with the resolve of the state government, especially on the Contributory Pension Scheme,” the statement read. “In effect, the initial position of the Congress subsists, and the declared trade dispute stands.”

Despite recent assurances from the state government, the workers have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.

Earlier, Governor Abiodun, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, announced a new payment plan for the Contributory Pension Scheme. The plan proposes phased payments spanning a 10-year period—from 2025 to 2035—covering both his remaining tenure and that of his successor.

“In phase one, we will pay outstanding contributions for retirees from July 2, 2025, to July 2030,” the governor said, adding that the second phase would cover retirees between July 2, 2030, and July 1, 2035.

The governor also stated that from July 2, 2025, there would be no more gratuity payments and that all consolidated salaries would revert to the Contributory Pension Scheme.

However, the labour unions have rejected the offer, insisting that the proposed timelines and lack of immediate solutions do not meet workers’ expectations.
