President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to depart Abuja on Sunday for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to attend the eighth-day prayer for the late Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on July 13 at the age of 91.
The respected monarch, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, was laid to rest the following day in a private Islamic burial ceremony in Ijebu-Ode, bringing to a close a remarkable 65-year reign marked by progress and outspoken advocacy for good governance.
The prayer ceremony will take place at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, a major venue in the town. Dignitaries including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, traditional rulers, political leaders, business moguls, and religious figures from across the country are expected to attend.
President Tinubu’s attendance underscores his personal connection to the late monarch. Oba Adetona was among the first leaders Tinubu consulted during his presidential campaign, and he later returned to the palace to express his appreciation after winning the 2023 election. During the monarch’s 90th birthday celebration, Tinubu conferred upon him Nigeria’s second-highest national honour.
As preparations for the event intensify, security has been heightened across Ijebu-Ode. Roads leading to key locations such as the stadium, the Awujale’s palace, and his Igbeba residence are under close surveillance. Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Amotekun Corps are stationed at strategic points to maintain order.
In honour of the revered monarch, several major markets including Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje will close on Sunday to allow residents and traders to pay their respects.
Local residents have described Oba Adetona as a transformative leader who prioritized education, development, and accountability. His influence extended beyond Ijebuland, making him a notable figure in national discourse.
“The President’s visit is a great honour to us. It shows the impact our Oba made on Nigeria,” said Yusuf Balogun, a local cab driver. Another resident, Damilola Ogunsanwo, noted that the event has also brought economic opportunities, with increased patronage for food vendors, traders, and hotels.
Hoteliers in Ijebu-Ode report that rooms are fully booked ahead of the event, with more visitors expected as dignitaries continue to arrive.
The eighth-day prayer not only marks an important Islamic tradition but also serves as a moment for national reflection on the legacy of a monarch who championed modernisation and left an indelible mark on his people and Nigeria at large.
