New Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank says he’s ready to take the club to “new heights” after officially stepping into the role following the departure of Ange Postecoglou.
In his first press conference on Friday, the 51-year-old former Brentford boss praised Tottenham’s recent Europa League triumph — their first major silverware in 17 years — but admitted there’s a long way to go after the team finished a dismal 17th in the Premier League last season.
While Frank lauded club captain Son Heung-min and vice-captain Cristian Romero, both of whom have been linked with moves away, he stopped short of confirming whether Son would retain the armband. However, he said both players would captain the team in halves during Saturday’s friendly against Reading.
“Sonny’s been here 10 years and finally got his well-deserved trophy this summer. Cristian Romero is a World Cup and Copa America winner. Both are crucial to us,” Frank stated.
Asked about Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White — who Spurs reportedly pursued by triggering a £60 million release clause — Frank deflected, saying, “I will not speak about players who are not mine.”
He acknowledged the risk of stepping into a club that recently sacked a manager despite delivering a European trophy. “I have the privilege of never being sacked before. That’s one reason I took the job — to add a bit more risk to my daily life,” Frank joked.
On a more serious note, he paid tribute to Postecoglou, calling him a “Tottenham legend” for ending the club’s decades-long European trophy drought.
As the club looks ahead to a fresh campaign, Frank emphasized ambition and optimism: “It’s about dreaming and hoping. I’ll do everything I can to help take this club to new heights.”
