Adamu Garba Warns Tinubu Against Sycophants, Raises Alarm Over APC’s Decline

Date:

Abuja — July 23, 2025 — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against the dangers of being misled by sycophants within his inner circle.

Garba, who spoke during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, expressed concern that the President is being fed inaccurate reports that do not reflect the harsh realities faced by Nigerians or the state of the APC.

“There is a lot of sycophancy around the president,” Garba said. “People are telling him that things are okay – things are not okay.”

The APC stalwart’s remarks come amid growing political tension following the resignation of former party chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and the emergence of a new opposition alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Garba described the ADC-led coalition as a major threat to the APC’s grip on power, warning that complacency within the ruling party could lead to its downfall.

“They [ADC coalition] hope for our loss, and that is why we need to be serious,” he said. “That is the more reason why we need a leadership that listens to criticisms and accepts facts without flattery or denial.”

He emphasized the need for introspection within the APC, particularly in the northern region, where the party’s influence has waned since the exit of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Garba pointed out that the party’s once-reliable northern support base had eroded even before Buhari’s death in early July 2025.

“In 2023, the APC managed only 5.5 million votes in the north. Where were the 12 million votes?” he asked. “Yet we won the election based on structures and strategy. But now, without Buhari, we must re-engineer those strategies to remain relevant.”

Garba’s comments underscore the growing internal debate within the APC as it seeks to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid mounting public discontent and the resurgence of opposition forces.
