The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has said it supports efforts by opposition parties to unite and unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. However, the party made it clear it will not merge into any coalition.
In a statement issued yesterday, the PDP clarified that its 2023 governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, remains a committed member of the party and has no plans to defect. While Adebutu may support the emerging opposition coalition in a personal capacity, the PDP said its structure in Ogun will remain intact and independent.
Director of Media and Communication for Ogun PDP, Bankole Akinloye, said the party is undeterred by recent defections and is focused on supporting credible efforts to rescue Nigeria from what it described as the APC’s misrule.
“We are not against the coalition, but we are not collapsing into it. The PDP in Ogun is strong, united, and remains a critical voice in the democratic space,” Akinloye said, reaffirming Adebutu’s leadership in the state chapter.
Olusola-Eleka Dumps PDP, May Join ADC
Meanwhile, in a separate development, former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, has formally resigned from the PDP. The former governorship candidate made the announcement in a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Ikere-Ekiti.
In the letter, Olusola-Eleka thanked the PDP for the opportunity to serve but expressed disappointment over what he called the party’s failure to provide effective opposition and leadership.
Sources indicate he may join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), one of the key opposition parties driving the new coalition movement.
Ekiti Group Denies Governor Is Funding Endorsements
In Ekiti State, the Tinubu and Oyebanji Statewide Endorsement Committee has dismissed claims that Governor Biodun Oyebanji is sponsoring his endorsement campaigns.
Speaking at a media briefing in Ado-Ekiti ahead of a mass endorsement event scheduled for July 28, 2025, Chairman of the committee, Abiodun Aluko, said the endorsements are voluntary and driven by the people in appreciation of what he described as “transformative leadership.”
“President Tinubu remains a strong pillar of democratic stability and national development. This programme is an opportunity to show our appreciation,” Aluko said.
Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Taiwo Olatunbosun, also addressed the issue, saying, “The governor has not spent a kobo of government or personal funds on these endorsements. He understands that doing so would raise credibility concerns.”
As political alignments continue to shift ahead of the 2027 elections, the PDP, ADC, and other parties are positioning themselves to challenge the APC’s grip on power both at the federal and state levels.
