The 2025 WTT Contender Lagos roared into life on Thursday, July 24, with an electrifying start that saw one of the tournament’s biggest upsets unfold at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Japan’s Hina Hayata, the women’s top seed, suffered a shock opening-day exit, falling to India’s Sreeja Akula in straight sets. Akula, the defending champion, delivered a dominant performance to defeat the world number six 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-3), sending a clear signal of intent in her title defence.
“I was well-prepared for the match, even though it was my first time playing against her,” Akula said after her win. “She’s the top-ranked player, but I didn’t focus on rankings. I just concentrated on my game.”
Ranked ninth and already a crowd favourite in Lagos, Akula described the city as a “lucky venue,” recalling her double title win in 2024. “Being the defending champion gives me confidence. Lagos has been a good hunting ground for me, and I’m really happy to be back.”
Also making headlines on Day One was Egypt’s teenage sensation Hana Goda. The 17-year-old came from behind to beat India’s Roy Krittwika 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7), earning a place in the round of 16. She is set to face Chinese Taipei’s Yi-Tian Yeh in the next round.
“My opponent played better than I expected,” Goda admitted. “She surprised me early on, but I’m happy I recovered. I hope to play better next round.”
Goda, seeded third in the tournament, expressed her excitement at being back in Lagos, where she claimed her first African title in 2022. “Lagos is special to me. I was sad to miss the tournament last year, but I’m here to give fans a better show.”
Egypt’s Dina Meshref, another former African champion, also progressed to the second round after a convincing first-round win, adding to a day filled with thrilling rallies and standout performances.
As early upsets and high-energy matches set the tone, the 2025 WTT Contender Lagos promises more drama in the days ahead.
