Senate Warns Pastor Tunde Bakare Against Attacks on 10th National Assembly

Date:

The Nigerian Senate has issued a stern caution to Pastor Tunde Bakare, warning him against using the National Assembly as a target for his frustrations over national issues.

The warning came from the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, in response to Bakare’s recent public remarks, which he described as “sweeping generalisations and disparaging commentary” directed at the legislative arm of government.

Adaramodu emphasized that while the Senate upholds every citizen’s constitutional right to express their views, it will not remain silent when such comments threaten the credibility of democratic institutions.

“Pastor Bakare, a cleric and political voice in his own right, has previously contributed to national discourse in ways that have spurred reflection and debate,” Adaramodu acknowledged. “However, his most recent statements veer away from constructive criticism into rhetoric, unfortunately laced with contempt and unsubstantiated claims.”

The senator reminded Nigerians that Bakare was not just a religious leader but also a former presidential aspirant and a vice-presidential candidate in past elections, noting that his criticisms might be politically motivated.

“We view his corrosive criticisms of the National Assembly as a biased and political ecumenical homily,” Adaramodu said.

The Senate’s response underscores growing tensions between political institutions and prominent public figures who continue to challenge the state of governance in Nigeria.
