West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing allegations by an independent regulatory commission, the club announced on Thursday.
The Brazilian international had faced four charges from the Football Association (FA), accused of deliberately getting booked in Premier League matches against Leicester (2022), and Aston Villa, Leeds, and Bournemouth (2023) to influence betting markets. If found guilty, the 27-year-old risked a lifetime ban from football.
However, after a hearing, the commission found the spot-fixing charges not proven. Paqueta, who consistently denied the allegations, expressed relief, thanking his family, fans, legal team, and West Ham for their unwavering support.
Despite the major charges being dismissed, the FA confirmed that Paqueta was found guilty on two lesser counts of failing to cooperate with the investigation. A separate commission will determine sanctions for those breaches.
In a statement, West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady said the club was pleased with the outcome and proud to have supported Paqueta throughout. His lawyer, Alastair Campbell, described the case as one of “immense pressure” for his client.
The FA said it is awaiting the commission’s written reasons before making further comments.
Paqueta joined West Ham in 2022 and remains a key figure in their midfield.
