Tinubu Hails D’Tigress, Awaits Team in Abuja After Historic AfroBasket Triumph

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their record-breaking seventh African championship title at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, declaring that he looks forward to receiving the team and their trophy in Abuja.

In a statement issued Sunday night following their 78–64 win over Mali in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan, Tinubu praised the team’s skill, resilience, and unity under the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama.

He commended the squad for overcoming a slow start in the final to clinch their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, describing their achievement as a symbol of the “indomitable Nigerian spirit.”

“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the power of unity and the rewards of hard work,” Tinubu said.

He lauded Coach Wakama and her technical crew, as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation, for their roles in sustaining the team’s excellence, assuring that the federal government would continue to support the team as they prepare for the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers in March.

“The government and people of Nigeria celebrate you and remain grateful for your sacrifices. I look forward to welcoming the victorious team and the trophy to Abuja,” the President added.
