House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the emergency rule in Rivers State has officially accepted the apology tendered by the state’s sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, after he failed to appear for a scheduled briefing. The committee, inaugurated on April 15 by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, was tasked with ensuring transparency and the rule of law in Rivers State during its transitional phase.Ibas was initially invited to address the lawmakers on April 17, a day after the committee’s formation. Following a rescheduling request, the session was moved to April 24. However, the administrator failed to attend, prompting concerns from committee members.Appearing before the committee on Friday, Ibas offered a formal apology, citing pressing demands in stabilizing governance in Rivers as the reason for his absence.“I hold the National Assembly in the highest regard,” he stated. “My absence was not out of disregard but due to the urgent demands of stabilising governance in a state under emergency rule. I only seek your understanding to grant additional time for a proper, well-prepared briefing.”He assured the committee of full cooperation and emphasized the need for accurate and clear engagement, given the complexities in the state.Committee Chairman and House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, acknowledged Ibas’ apology and said the committee would reschedule the briefing.“In keeping with the House’s tradition of fairness, and in recognition of the Administrator’s respect and responsibility, we have magnanimously accepted his apology,” Ihonvbere said.He added that a new date would be announced soon, and reiterated the committee’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.
